The Restaurant Scene in CSL and SJ

We have over 150 restaurants in this area. Since there is virtually no supervision of state or municipal authorities, combined with a constantly changing customer base, the restaurant scene is akin to a swamp with lots of dangers lurking underneath. We’ll help you to steer clear of disappointment.

The most crowded categories are Mexican Food, Seafood, and Italian. The ingredients necessary for cooking great Mexican food are readily available, and there is no excuse, other than untalented chefs, to serve a poorly prepared Mexican dish. You would be surprised how many chef-less Mexican restaurants there are in Cabo. ( Oh, my grand-ma had some great recipes type story…) On the bright side, Cabo is home to the best authentic Mexican restaurants in all of Baja., which is one of those places when you travel somewhere you don’t want to miss. (Mi Casa Restaurant)

Seafood is the most abundant resource around here. The Mar of Cortez & Pacific provides us year-round with a great variety of fish and shell-fish that most restaurants , no matter what cuisine they are trying to represent, work into their menus. Watch out however: seafood needs to be fresh, and you need to sell lots of it to turn your inventory over, which most restaurants are a far cry from achieving. That’s why the frozen sea bass dominates the Cabo dining scene as the main fish option. Yet there are only a few restaurants who work with a fresh product and prepare it beyond the standard grilled and butter version. Surprisingly, most seafood restaurants serve internationalized recipes trying to cater to the tourist customer forgetting that this kind of seafood is much better in Seattle, Portland and San Francisco. The Mexican version of truly tried and authentic coastal dishes from around the endless coats of Mexico is the one worth trying while visiting our beautiful Baja. At least all our friends who visit us from allover the world think so.(Mi Casa de Mariscos) Pay much attention to our seafood section!

Italian food in Cabo- well, nice try amigo. Forget great Tuscan food that requires certain ingredients just not available around here : you can’t get a truly good fresh pasta in this town. As simple as that. Italian restaurants in Cabo, in our experience are often selected by a group of diners when there is no consensus among the group as to where to go. Italian is the neutral cuisine. Well, the true Italian food lovers will be in for a rude awakening here in Cabo. And that is before we even talk about price.

The European influence, however, is very positively present in some Mediterranean style restaurants. Some of them have a real chef at least. There is a certain degree of innovation in this category combining the traditional continental care and presentation of food with the more open daring Latin flare of things. One of the all-time best restaurants of Cabo is in that category: (Peacocks)

The more exotic cuisines apart from sushi are not worth mentioning. Cabo has good sushi, Very expensive though. Sushi lives by the freshness of the seafood. That we have. Our main sushi guy has gone more fusion which is not to everybody’s liking. But then again, sushi is not for everybody anyway.
